Arsenal turned on the style to beat Tottenham 2-0 in the north London derby at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The Gunners went in front through Shkodran Mustafi when the defender headed home from Mesut Ozil's free-kick.

Tottenham protested the decision to award the set-piece after Davinson Sanchez was adjudged to have fouled his namesake Alexis.

And the Chilean was on target minutes later, finishing well from a tight angle to double Arsenal's advantage.

Tottenham fans hit out at referee Mike Dean for what they considered to be two mistakes in the build-up to Shkodran Mustafi’s opening goal in the north London derby.

Dean felt that Spurs defender Davinson Sanchez fouled Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez despite the defender appearing to get a foot on the ball, and then from the subsequent free-kick Mustafi seemed to be marginally offside as he rose to head home Mesut Ozil’s delivery.

There were also question marks over the second goal, with Alexandre Lacazette very close to being offside before he raced through and teed up Arsenal’s Sanchez.

Arsenal fans couldn’t believe their eyes when Mesut Ozil “outmuscled” Mousa Dembele in the north London derby - and immediately took to Twitter to voice their their shock.

The German, who has been criticised for being lethargic at times this season, started the clash in fine fashion and was putting himself about.

But it came as a complete shock to Gunners supporters when the 29-year-old shrugged off the normally strong Spurs midfielder.

'It's not rocket science'

Arsenal have handed Alexandre Lacazette a start in the north London derby at the Emirates.

The Frenchman has impressed so far this season since arriving from Lyon but has been left on the bench in the big games.

He scored from the bench in the defeat to Manchester City and Arsenal fans had hoped he would start against Tottenham.

And Gunners fans have got their wish ahead of the clash at the Emirates.

Shkodran Mustafi has also returned to the starting line-up after injury.

Combined XI

Arsenal and Tottenham face off in the north London derby this weekend with a power shift on the horizon in the capital.

The Gunners have dominated their local rivals for around 20 years but Mauricio Pochettino has turned things around.

Spurs have been the better side in the last two campaigns and go into this weekend’s clash at the Emirates four points clear of Arsenal.

Another victory will ensure yet more woe for Arsene Wenger’s side.

Ahead of this weekend’s showdown, we have taken a look at the two sides and picked an all-star combined XI.

Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes Arsene Wenger should quit if Tottenham win the north London derby.

The two fierce rivals meet at the Emirates on Saturday with Spurs four points clear of the Gunners.

Arsenal were the dominant force in north London but the power has shifted in recent years.

And Merson believes Wenger should walk away if his side are shown up by Mauricio Pochettino’s men at the Emirates.

If Arsenal lose, Arsene Wenger should walk away. That should be it for him .

I remember when you never expected Spurs to get much out of these games, and you knew they’d still finish below Arsenal at the end of the season. Not any more.

I haven’t spoken to a single Arsenal fan who fancies them to win.

It has swung so massively in Tottenham’s favour it’s embarrassing.

Wenger gives Pochettino trophy advice

Arsene Wenger has told Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino that his side must overcome the “fear” of not winning a trophy if they are to earn silverware in the future.

Spurs have improved markedly since the arrival of Pochettino in 2014 and finished second in the Premier League last season.

They also ended the campaign above Arsenal for the first time in Wenger’s 21-year reign - although the Gunners did win the FA Cup for a record 13th time.

Despite earning plenty of admirers for their style and exuberance, Tottenham have not been able to win a trophy since lifting the League Cup in 2008.

Pochettino has yet to come under pressure to start delivering silverware but, ahead of Saturday’s north London derby at the Emirates Stadium, Wenger has offered words of advice to the Argentinian.

Asked how he got over the line to deliver his first trophy as a manager, Wenger replied: “By keeping your nerves and getting the players to focus on what is important.”

Arsenal should DROP Sanchez and Ozil reckons former Gunners favourite

Arsenal should drop Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil for Saturday’s North London derby, according to one former Gunners favourite.

Charlie Nicholas, who played over 150 top-flight games for the club during a five-year spell in the 1980s, believes Arsene Wenger’s best chance of victory is to leave his two big names out in favour of Alexandre Lacazette and Danny Welbeck.

Despite their undoubted ability, Nicholas believes Sanchez and Ozil go missing in too many big games to justify being given starting berths against Arsenal’s fiercest rivals.

“If Arsenal are serious about winning these big games, I would go with Alexandre Lacazette and Danny Welbeck and leave Ozil out and Sanchez out,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

Cech admits title frustrations

Petr Cech has admitted his frustration at Arsenal’s failure to mount a serious title challenge since he moved to the Emirates.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger signed Cech from London rivals Chelsea in 2015 to try and add the finishing touches to a potentially title-winning team.

But Wenger’s men have fallen short in each of the two seasons and already look outside bets in this year’s race.

But Cech, 35, who won the Premier League four times at Chelsea, admits he can understand the fans’ frustrations particularly as they have not won it since 2004.

The atmosphere could reach boiling point if they lose the North London derby and Cech said: “When I joined the club, you can see how big and strong the support the club has.

“People are passionate, they’ve been supporting the club over the years.

“When you are used to seeing the team winning the title and suddenly have a 12 year gap then when you have a little hope, then there’s a little bit missing, you have one point missing there, two points missing here.

“That’s why last season the reaction of the fans was the strongest because when you accumulate year after year then I can understand the frustration.

“I have to say as a player you get frustrated as well when you don’t reach your targets because that’s why you come every day, prepare every day, why you train and I’m used to winning titles and I’m not happy when three years in a row you don’t win one.”
