Philippe Coutinho and Mo Salah have been left out of the Liverpool squad for Burnley.

Salah is facing a couple of weeks on the sidelines with a knee injury, while Coutinho appears to have been rested following the hectic Christmas schedule.

New signing Virgil van Dijk cannot play today as his registration cannot be completed before January 2.

Burnley defender James Tarkowski returns from a ban.

Tarkowski has served a three-game suspension and boss Sean Dyche must decide whether to recall him to the starting line-up or retain Kevin Long and Ben Mee in central defence.

Left-back Stephen Ward (knee) and striker Chris Wood (leg) remain doubtful, while Robbie Brady (knee) and Tom Heaton (shoulder) are long-term absentees.

Burnley XI: Pope, Bardsley, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor, Arfield, Cork, Hendrick, Defour, Gudmundsson, Barnes. Subs: Lindegaard, Lowton, Vokes, Walters, Westwood, Long, Wells.

Liverpool XI: Mignolet, Alexander-Arnold, Klavan, Lovren, Gomez, Can, Wijnaldum, Lallana, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mane, Solanke. Subs: Karius, Milner, Firmino, Robertson, Ings, Matip, Woodburn.

5 talking points from the game

Sadio Mane defied the elements to produce a wonder strike as Liverpool edged out Burnley in a see-saw encounter.

On horrible Lancashire afternoon where the wind and rain screamed off the Moor Tops above this ground, there was virtually no chance of the open football Liverpool favour.

Instead it was the battle Jurgen Klopp had predicted, with Burnley matching their wealthy rivals for long periods, and sensing blood as the game ground on.

After an afternoon of frustration and disappointment, Mane shrugged off his indifferent form of late with an incredible turn and shot that screamed into Nick Pope’s net.

Johann Gudmondsson looked to have ensured the spoils would be shared with an 89th-minute leveller before Ragnar Klavan struck late on.

Here, we look at some of the key issues from an enthralling contest.

Liverpool fans notice "suspicious" Coutinho absence

Philippe Coutinho missed Liverpool’s clash with Burnley with a reported thigh problem on New Year’s Day.

The Brazilian playmaker was expected to feature for the Reds, who recently lost star player Mohammed Salah for a minimum of two weeks with a knee injury.

But Coutinho failed to travel to Turf Moor with the rest of the Liverpool squad for this afternoon’s Premier League clash.

Liverpool fans have been active on social media ever since it was announced that the Brazilian would play no part in the New Year’s Day clash.

Some have apparently accepted that the player is merely injured, but others believe a conspiracy may be at play.

Back in August, when the summer transfer window was open, Coutinho was ruled out of first-team contention with a back injury. He later returned to the squad when the window slammed shut.

And now that the January transfer window has opened, the same things has happened, prompting some fans to dub his exclusion “suspicious”.

How Liverpool squad reacted to Van Dijk signing

Georginio Wijnaldum has spoken out about how the Liverpool dressing room reacted to the news Virgil van Dijk had signed.

The Reds parted with £75million to land the Holland international, who was unveiled on the day the January transfer window opened.

His fellow countryman spoke about why he is so delighted the former Southampton defender is finally a Reds player.

He also insisted that the 26-year-old - who is regarded one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League - can get even better.

“Liverpool is a big club that will always sign big players,” Wijnaldum told liverpoolfc.com.

“In the squad, everyone will be happy if big players come to the club because it gives you a better chance of winning games and winning trophies.

“Everyone is excited, not only the players but also the fans and the people at the club. We’re always excited if players choose Liverpool [when] they could also choose other teams.”

Coutinho left out of Liverpool squad

Philippe Coutinho has been left out of Liverpool’s squad for their Premier League clash with Burnley.

The Brazilian wasn’t even on the coach that travelled to Turf Moor for the New Year’s Day fixture.

Mohamed Salah also failed to make the journey, but is currently out for a minimum of two wees after suffering a knee injury.

Coutinho’s apparent exclusion from the first-team squad comes just days after Nike ‘confirmed’ his moved to Barcelona.

An advertisement for the Barca shop proclaimed Coutinho wass “ready to light up Camp Nou” and called him “the Magician”.

The ad has since been taken down, been it is believed Barcelona, who attempted to sign the midfielder in the summer, will step up their interest now that the January transfer window has opened.

Liverpool recently splashed the cash to land £75million centre-back Virgil van Dijk - making him the world’s most expensive defender in the process.
