Liverpool were forced to settle for a point on their return to the Champions League as Roberto Firmino's missed penalty proved costly.
They got off to a nightmare start with Dejan Lovren's error was pounced on by Wissam Ben Yedder, but hit back through Firmino and Mo Salah to take the lead.
However, the Brazilian couldn't find the net from the spot before the break, and he was punished as Joaquin Correa netted to seal a point for the visitors.
Joe Gomez was sent off late in the piece for the hosts.
Here are five talking points from our man at Anfield, David McDonnell...
1. Lovren mistake leads to early goal
Much was made of Dejan Lovren's omission at the weekend, when Liverpoo were routed 5-0 at Manchester City, with Ragnar Klavan partnering Joel Matip in central defence.
Lovren returned to the starting line-up but was at fault for Sevilla's opener, failing to cut out Sergio Escudero's cross.
Liverpool's defence were also caught flat-footed for Sevilla's second goal, as a quickly taken throw caught them off guard and allowed Joaquin Correra to level for the visitors.
2. Mane underlines his enduring value
Having seen his appeal against his suspension for serious foul play rejected, following his reckless challenge on Manchester City keeper Ederson, Sadio Mane will sit out Liverpool's next three domestic games.
Here he underlined just how much Liverpool will miss him, driving their attack and tormenting Sevilla's defenders with his pace, quick feet and clever movement.
3. Liverpool misses proved costly
Liverpool were in the ascendancy when Mane surged through the middle in the first-half and found Emre Can, who had enough time to put the ball on to his right foot, rather than screwing it wide with his left.
Then Roberto Firmino missed a penalty that would have put Liverool 3-1 up and in total control. Those misses continued and proved costly as Sevilla pegged Liverpool back.
4. Moreno shows his value going forward
Alberto Moreno may not be able to defend with conviction and confidence, but the left-back is a different proposition going forward, as he proved with his role in Liverpool's equaliser, exchanging a quick one-two with Jordan Henderson before crossing for Firmino to steer the ball in.
James Milner filed in at left-back last season, but the role now belongs to Moreno. If only he could defend.
5. Coutinho given a warm reception on his return
Having failed to force through a move to Barcelona, Philippe Coutinho finally made his long-awaited return for Liverpool last night – to rapturous cheers from the Anfield crowd.
Any anger at perceived disloyalty on the part of Coutinho was put to one side by the home fans as they welcomed the Brazilian playmaker back into the fold, desperate for him to inspire then with his magic.
