Manchester United claimed their fourth win out of four in the Champions League this season with a 2-0 triumph over Benfica at Old Trafford.

Martial spurned an early chance to take the lead when he won a penalty which he stepped up to take, but saw his weak effort saved by teenage stopper Mile Svilar.

And while that penalty save from the young Benfica goalkeeper acted as redemption for his gaffe when the sides met last time, his luck soon changed, as a long-range Nemanja Matic shot came off the post, hit him and rolled into the back of the net.

The hosts doubled their lead in the second half when they won another penalty - which Daley Blind stepped up for this time, slotting home with aplomb.

Mourinho puts faith in youth

For a coach not renowned for putting his trust in young players, Mourinho has done his best to refute that charge at United, and handed 20-year-old midfielder Scott McTominay his first Champions League start, and was rewarded with a composed 90-minute display from the Lancaster-born Academy graduate, who fully justified his inclusion.

Penalty confusion irks Mourinho

The most animated Mourinho got all night was with the confusion that preceded United's second goal, from the penalty spot, in the 78th minute. Romelu Lukaku stepped up to take the spot-kick, a decision that infuriated Mourinho, whose ire was only soothed when Ander Herrera and Daley Blind intervened, the latter ultimately converting from the spot, with Mourinho making a talking motion with his hand after the goal, to indicate his dismay at the confusion over the identity of the taker.

Mourinho makes statement with Rashford

Jose Mourinho has had multiple digs at Manchester United fans this week, but perhaps the loudest came in his line-up for tonight’s match.

On the young striker’s 20th birthday, Mourinho left him on the bench.

This followed his jibe in the programme notes with a callback to the Red Devils faithful’s booing of Rashford being taken off for Anthony Martial at the weekend - before the replacement scored the winner.

“I hope that you enjoy the game more than some of you did against Tottenham,” he wrote.
Martial started, and had a penalty saved while squandering other chances, shen what the fans wanted was the two youngsters up front together.

Sure, it could could be as simple as keeping Rashford fresh for Chelsea at the weekend, but Mourinho made it clear he won’t be told what to do.

Rashford eventually came on for Martial in the 75th minute.

Spare a thought for the teen keeper

Mile Svilar must just want to curl up in bed and lock the door.

After carrying Rashford’s long-range shot over the line in these side’s first encounter, he could hardly be blamed for tonight’s opener.

Nemanja Matic’s long-range shot appeared unthreatening but when it came off the upright and rebounded into the back of the net he must have wanted the ground the swallow him up.

And this after a good save from Martial’s tame effort from the spot.

One to put down to experience, son.

Old Trafford a veritable fortress for Mourinho

Mourinho has copped the criticism for the manner in which his side has done it but there’s no denying United’s incredible home record.

Tonight’s comfortable, if unremarkable, win marked their 20th in a unbeaten streak at Old Trafford as their impressive run continues.

That includes 15 wins and four draws - not a record many fans would find reason to boo if offered it at the start of the season.
