Manchester United opened their defence of the Carabao Cup with a 4-1 cruise against Championship Burton after an early Marcus Rashford double.

Boss Jose Mourinho made nine changes from the side which demolished Everton in the Premier League last Sunday leaving £75 million top scorer Romelu Lukaku on the bench.

But United were still amongst the goals as they romped to victory.

Rashford struck early with two eye-catching finishes and although Burton weren't disgraced, United rammed home their dominance with Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial adding further goals to put United in the hat for the fourth round.

Lloyd Dyer managed to score with the last kick of the game for the first goal at Old Trafford this season not scored by the home team.

1. Jose's casual look

Jose Mourinho has been the picture of style and panache on the touchline early season rocking a smart suit, white shirt and suede shoes.

The United boss opted for the casual look on a wet Mancunian night against Burton with tracksuit bottoms, trainers and an Adidas training coat.

But he still means business

That was evident from the team sheet, packed with super-stars despite making nine changes with £75 million hit man Romelu Lukaku on the bench along with Marouane Fellaini while Nemanja Matic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Antonio Valencia watched from the stands.

2. Rashford revelling without Lukaku

With top scorer Romelu Lukaku left on the bench by Jose Mourinho for a well earned breather after scoring seven goals in as many games Rashford led the line for United.

And the United and England striker enjoyed being the main man, revelling in his central role with an eye-catching double to put his side in cruise control with just 17 minutes gone.

The target man role for £75 million Lukaku normally forces Rashford to operate wide left, but the youngster gave Mourinho a glimpse of his deadly ability as the focal point of attack using his searing pace to terrorise Burton.

3. Classy Carrick

Michael Carrick knew he wouldn't get too much game time when he signed on for a final year at Old Trafford last summer.

But the 36-year-old probably didn't think he'd have to wait until late September for his first taste of first team action.

It was worth the wait for a half-full Old Trafford, though, as the crowd favourite pulled the strings for United with a reminder of his silky skills, sumptuous range of passing and general classiness. True quality - so enjoy him while you can.

4. Return of the forgotten man

Luke Shaw's Manchester United career has lurched from heartbreak to disaster but the £27 million left back – still just 22 – will be hoping better days are ahead after making his first appearance of the season after yet more injury woe.

Old Trafford fans are willing him to succeed but he's still got a long way to go to convince boss Jose Mourinho he has a long United career ahead of him.

Playing Nigel Clough's Championship side Burton was a gentle introduction back for Shaw who not surprisingly looked rusty and short of match fitness in his wing back role.

5. No Lukaku - no song

With United fans under the microscope for an offensive new ditty for their goalscoring hero Romelu Lukaku the song police were listening out for a repeat of the chant.

But there was no airing of the bad-taste song which makes reference to Lukaku's manhood and was roundly condemned by the club and anti-racist group Kick it Out.

United fans did chant “We'll sing what we want” - but thankfully there was no repeat of the song which has been branded “offensive and discriminatory” by Kick it Out.
