It's as you were at the top of the Premier League as the top three all recorded victories over the weekend.

Manchester United remain eight points off neighbours Man City at the summit after their 3-1 win in a barnstormer at Arsenal.

City themselves were forced to work harder than they might have expected against relegation-threatened West Ham, needing to come from behind to earn all three points.

And third-placed Chelsea also recovered from conceding the first goal to win, beating Newcastle 3-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool jumped into the top four by thrashing Brighton 5-1, while Swansea slipped to the bottom of the table after defeat at Stoke.

Here are 10 talking points from the weekend...

1. City have character to go with their class

City have rightly been praised for the way they have ripped teams apart with their talented, free-flowing attack. But in the few games they have also shown they can dig deep to win.

This game had upset written all over it when West Ham took the lead just before half-time and their organised 5-4-1 formation had stuffed City out.

But the Blues did not panic and equalised through Nicolas Otamendi before David Silva scored yet another late winner for the Blues seven minutes from time.

2. Moyes can sort West Ham out

The stats will show that Moyes has taken just one point from his first four games in charge, but they deserved much more than to lose against City.

They frustrated them for 83 minutes and it was only City’s quality which got them over the line in David Silva. West Ham were extremely well organised defensively and posed a threat on the break and from set-pieces.

They should be able to climb away from trouble if they keep playing like this.

3. Pogba puts City on red alert

Paul Pogba saw a straight red card for a stud-high reckless challenge on Hector Bellerin.

Up until that point the Frenchman was having a good game, doing brilliantly to set up Jesse Lingard's second goal and Manchester United's third.

Following his dismissal Pogba walked away from the referee clapping, which could see him in further trouble. In the end the red card mattered little to the game's outcome, but it matters a lot for United's next three games.

United's star midfielder will now miss the Manchester derby next weekend as well as subsequent clashes against Bournemouth and West Brom.

4. Koscielny endures night of horrors

Laurent Koscielny has distinguished himself as one of the Premier League's most outstanding defenders but he showed an alarming inability to make the correct decision.

An atrocious night stemmed from a woeful cross-field pass that was picked off before a neat move culminated in Antonio Valencia smashing in the opener.

Manchester United regularly dragged the France centre-back out of position to hurry him before ruthlessly exposing his ill-judged positioning.

The Gunners stood little hope with Koscielny exposed once again by defending too tight to Paul Pogba, who casually rolled him inside the box before squaring to Jesse Lingard for his second of the night.

5. Salah's evolution continues

The Premier League's top scorer didn't help himself to his 13th goal of the season, but he is continuing to mature into an outstanding all-round attacker.

During his times at Basel and Chelsea it was easy to deride him as just another speed merchant, always looking to spin off the back of opposing defences and get in behind.

But the Egyptian has added to his game, become more tactically intelligent during his Italian sojourn, and is now adding more attacking weapons to his armoury.

That maturation continues with Salah increasingly looking more and more at home playing through central areas, making himself not only an increasing threat in transition, but also in tightly-packed central areas.

It was Salah in transition who took the game away from the Seagulls, countering and playing the right pass for the second, before doing similar for the third.

His evolution is proving a thrilling watch and that £37million looks a bargain already.

6. Murray misses prove costly

Eventually Glenn Murray got his goal, the Brighton striker converting from the penalty spot in the 51st minute.

By then however, the veteran striker had missed two standout opportunities and his side were 3-0 down.

As the game was settling down early doors it was Murray who had the opening chance of the match; Gaeton Bong's cross found the Seagulls striker, who was on the half turn as Gini Wijnaldum tried to put him off.

Murray elected to swivel and shoot from six yards instead of teeing up Pascal Gross; the wayward effort flew well wide, leaving the German unhappy not to have been given the chance.

Murray would then be denied by a brilliant Mignolet save three minutes into the second half (at 2-0), having got in front of his marker. Within 60 seconds, it was 3-0.

The 34-year-old is Brighton's top scorer with five goals now this season, and Chris Hughton will be pleased that the veteran hitman is getting chances at the top level. However, there can be no doubt that he needs to be more ruthless.

7. Chelsea just have to keep winning and hoping

Seven games unbeaten in the Premier League now as the Blues close the gap on Manchester City to eight points before the leaders play again tomorrow.

If Pep Guardiola’s team keep up their ridiculous form, there will be little the champions or anyone else can do.

But there is the Manchester derby next weekend while Chelsea have a run of three more very winnable home games - Southampton, Brighton and Stoke before New Year.

First they need go guarantee they finish top of their Champions League group against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday with a win.

8. Spurs have hit a wall

A few weeks ago Tottenham were being painted as Manchester City’s most likely challengers.

But Mauricio Pochettino’s men have recently hit a wall, and with two points from their last four games, Spurs now sit sixth - 18 points off top spot.

Against Watford an open entertaining affair could have gone either way, with chances at both ends. Unfortunately for Spurs, who had Davinson Sanchez sent off, they just weren’t clinical enough.

It was very much a similar story at Leicester in midweek; defeated 2-1, they could easily have left the King Power with a 4-2 victory, such had been the quality of the opportunities they passed up.

There isn’t too much wrong with Spurs right now, other than a need to sharpen up in their own defensive third and also in the final third.

Successive home matches against APOEL, Stoke and Brighton give them the perfect chance to do just that.

9. Sam Allardyce in a nutshell

What you see is what you get with Sam Allardyce.

The new Everton boss launched his reign against Huddersfield by ticking off the checklist he has employed to great success for most of his managerial career - be hard to beat, take the minimum of risks, keep a clean sheet, score a goal (or in this case, two) and collect three points.

It may not be pretty at times, but it is effective.

10. Clement on the brink

There's an overwhelming favourite in the Premier League sack race - and his side sit bottom of the Premier League.

Swansea's defeat at Stoke made it eight games without a win in all competitions since their victory over Huddersfield on October 14.

Former Real Madrid assistant Clement in now odds-on to be the next top-flight gaffer to get the chop with his side for points adrift of safety.
