He might have splashed millions improving his Manchester United side since being named manager back in 2016, but Jose Mourinho still doesn't have "the team I want".

The Portuguese added to his squad with the signings of Romelu Lukaku, Victor Lindelof and Nemanja Matic over the summer, but says it will be this time next year before he his satisfied with his group of players.

"I have said three [summer] transfer windows is what I need to have the team I want to have," he told The Times.

"The team I think can bring Manchester United to the top of English football and to close the gap to the top of European football again. And I still think we need that third transfer window, but I'm not going to wait for the third transfer window to try to reach it."

So which players are capable of taking the Red Devils back to the summit of world football? Here are five men on Mourinho's radar that could make all the difference.

Gareth Bale

It's no secret the Manchester United boss has been keeping tabs on the Real Madrid forward, who is capable of improving the Red Devils over night.

Bale is falling down the pecking order at Los Blancos, where Isco and youngster Marco Asensio continue to shine, and where Cristiano Ronaldo resides.

Injuries have hampered his time in the Spanish capital and a transfer back to the Premier League might just be what the doctor ordered.

He also fits Mourinho's bill perfectly as he has previously proved he can succeed in England's top flight, something the Portuguese considered in picking Nemanja Matic of Monaco's Fabinho.

Mourinho was interested in signing the Wales international this summer, but got the impression he didn't want to leave.

Bale was also picked by Zinedine Zidane in Madrid's friendly against United, and Mourinho openly interpreted this as the Frenchman proving he was still in his plans.

That could all change come next summer however, and if it does, you can expect Manchester United to be first in the queue to provide Bale with an escape route.

Antoine Griezmann

Under any other circumstance, or rather, if Atletico Madrid hadn't been banned from making transfers in the summer's window, the France international would be wearing a Manchester United shirt right now.

He was Mourinho's top summer target and a player who was extremely keen on a move to old Trafford, which he even went close to admitting on French TV.

But understandably Griezmann didn't want to leave his team in the lurch by joining Manchester United at a time when Atletico couldn't replace him.

As of January Diego Simeone will once again be in a position to start making signings, with Chelsea's wantaway striker Diego Costa expecting to join.

As a result, you can be sure that Mourinho will be keeping track of the situation and that United might even target the Frenchman in the winter transfer window.

Thomas Lemar

The Monaco star is seemingly on the radar of every Premier League club, what with Arsenal making a Deadline Day bid for the Frenchman and Liverpool reportedly considering doing the same.

Mourinho has previously stated that he wants to sign a player that "allows me to play with three at the back and have a wing-back," and Lemar could fit this bill.

According to Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev the France international was keen on a move to the Premier League, but despite opportunities to leave Monaco for England, stayed put.

Paul Pogba recently dropped a subtle hint that he could convince his international teammate to join the cause, and after helping the club clinch Romelu Lukaku, this might just work in Mourinho's favour should he target Lemar next season.

Ivan Perisic

The one that got away... for now. As mentioned above, Mourinho made signing a versatile winger his top priority alongside bringing in a centre-forward and a defensive midfielder this summer.

He achieved the latter objectives in signing Matic and Lukaku, but is still keen on strengthening the Red Devils out wide.

Mourinho made it very clear throughout the summer that he wanted to land the Inter Milan winger, but after a lot of back and forth between the two sides a deal was never completed.

Next season the Portuguese may look to reignite his interest in Perisic in a bid to finally strengthen the position at United, and create a team in his mould.

Danny Rose

The Tottenham left-back put a spanner in the works at Spurs when he told The Sun he felt under-valued and misunderstood at White Hart Lane. He also said he will at some point ply his trade up north, putting both Manchester clubs on red alert.

As things stand Mourinho seems relatively happy with his defence. His side have yet to concede a goal in the Premier League this season, and behind the back line United have one of the best keepers in the world in David de Gea.

That said, if Rose is available and seemingly willing to join the Red Devils in the summer then you can expect Mourinho to make a move.

United haven't had a world class left-back since Patrice Evra, and the Portuguese is seemingly not a huge fan of the injury-prone Luke Shaw.
