Arsene Wenger has revealed Arsenal's "immense drive" to win the Champions League.

The Gunners get their European campaign underway away to Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night.

Wenger goes into the clash having seen his side knocked out of the competition at the last 16 stage in each of the last five campaigns.

After exiting to Barcelona, AC Milan and Bayern Munich twice, last season's elimination at the hands of Monaco was the Gunners' most disappointing exit of the lot.

“If we missed one game last year, then it was our home game with Monaco,” Wenger said. “We were not patient enough and we wanted to make the difference in the first game.

“We know we have some way to put that right, that is a regret of the season last year. We know as well that we can show that we have learnt from that."

Arsenal have only ever reached the final once, losing 2-1 to Barcelona after going a goal up in 2006.

And while Wenger says his motivation to win the trophy is high, the Frenchman is being realistic with his expectations.

“This drive [to win the competition] is immense," Wenger added. "It has never been done at Arsenal and we were very, very, very, close.

“On the other hand, I have been long enough in the job to know you have to be realistic and know that you have to put hard work in."
