After a thrilling 3-3 draw with Watford on the opening day of the season, Liverpool looked set to be real Premier League contenders.

They beat Hoffenheim in Champions League qualifying before seeing off Crystal Palace in the Premier League and then battering Hoffenheim again.

Next came their greatest win of the season, a 4-0 victory over top-four rivals Arsenal, which just so happened to be Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's last game for the club.

The England winger moved to Anfield on the final day of the transfer window, and suddenly Liverpool's form took a turn for the worst.

The Reds were battered 5-0 by Manchester City before drawing 2-2 with Sevilla and 1-1 with Burnley. Klopp's men then lost 2-0 to Leicester City before they returned the favour in the Premier League four days later, beating the Foxes 3-2.

Their final fixture ahead of this weekend saw them draw 1-1 with Spartak Moscow, meaning Reds fans - and more importantly, Jurgen Klopp - were looking at the Newcastle game as an opportunity to turn the club's fortunes around.

But they failed to do so. After taking the lead through Philippe Coutinho, Liverpool were pegged back when Joselu found the back of the net nine minutes before half time.

Klopp's men had the second 45 to reassert their dominance, but were unable to do so, despite coming close on a couple of occassions.

The Liverpool boss could be seen getting increasingly frustrated as his attacking team failed to find the target, and was even the subject of a few laughs when Oxlade-Chamberlain headed wide in the dying embers of the game.

Sky Sports cameras picked the German out rubbing his head in shock at the miss from a few yards as Gunners supporters took to sharing the clip, reminiscing on the time they had the winger in their ranks.
