Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has revealed how Rangers tried to sign him as a teenager, only for then Gunners boss George Graham to keep their approach a secret.

'The Romford Pele' was coming through the ranks at Highbury when Walter Smith tried to bring him to Glasgow, but Parlour says the move was kept from him to stop him using it as a way of demanding a more lucrative contract with the club.

The 44-year-old told The Sun: "I've been out with Walter Smith and he told me 'look, I tried to sign you when you were a youngster'.

"George Graham didn't tell me though obviously because I would have gone for a new contract at Arsenal.

"I was very happy to stay at Arsenal at the time, I would definitely have negotiated a new contract though and got more money out of Graham."

Parlour went on to stay in North London for 13 years, winning three Premier League titles and making 466 appearances as he established himself as a fans' favourite and club legend.

He left to join Middlesbrough in 2004, before retiring from football three years later.
