Four points off the top of the Premier League table and Arsenal are very much in the midst of the title race.

But as Arsene Wenger reaches his own personal milestone - 1000 games - he needs to show that he still has the nose for trophies this season, whether in the league or the FA Cup.

Having spent big last summer on Mesut Ozil , and with a massive summer war chest expected in 2014, the French coach now has the financial clout to compete for trophies - and Arsenal fans expect.

Here’s the latest news and transfer rumours surrounding the north London club.

Saturday's Arsenal stories from the Daily Mirror

Our man Neil McLeman has revealed that Wenger is all set to sign a new contract at the Emirates Stadium.

Although the Frenchman is out of contract this summer, he has declared that a new deal will soon be signed.

“My commitment is full. I do not want to look somewhere else. I want to stay here. There shouldn’t be any uncertainty at all.

“My desire is to stay. It will be done soon, but I want now to focus on the end of the season.”

Ahead of his 1000th match in charge, Wenger has revealed that he almost faced a mutiny following his opening match as boss - over Mars Bars.

Having arrived at Highbury as something of an unknown quantity from Japan in 1996, Wenger set about changing the diets of experienced players such as Tony Adams, Martin Keown and Lee Dixon - and they weren't initially too keen.

“People were asking who I was,” recalled the 64-year-old of his arrival at the Gunners. “I was a complete unknown. And there was no history of a foreign manager succeeding in England.

“I changed a few habits of the players, which isn’t easy in a team with an average age of 30 years - at the first match the players were chanting, ‘We want our Mars bars!’

“At half-time, I asked my physio Gary Lewin, ‘Nobody is talking, what’s wrong with them?’ He replied, ‘They’re hungry’ - I hadn’t given them their chocolate before the game. It was funny."

Also on the Frenchman, Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish has declared Gunners fans "lucky" to have him - and that what he has achieved with the club is "remarkable."

"People revere Dennis Bergkamp, but Wenger deserves a lot of the credit for reviving his career.

"Look at what he did for Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Emmanuel Petit and Nicolas Anelka as well.

"Not only could he spot a good player, but he made a lot of money for the club when he sold them. He has rebuilt time and again and spent less money than a lot of other managers while he was doing it."

Ahead of today's London derby between Chelsea and Arsenal, Sol Campbell - part of The Invincibles in 2003-04 - is hoping that his former club can claim three points at Stamford Bridge - so as to “blow the whole title race wide open”.

And Campbell, who spent six years playing under Wenger, says that he hopes the Gunners live for the here and now, and go for the win against Jose Mourinho's side.

“It was a big result for Arsenal at Tottenham [winning last Sunday's North London derby]. Please God, if they can win at Chelsea, I think it will definitely blow the whole title race wide open.

"Then it will be really exciting until the end. They need to beat Chelsea to have any chance. They need to pull them back and put pressure on the three other teams.

“Arsenal are getting closer to winning a trophy. But I am not waiting for next year. Next year it is totally different thing - new players, and everything. You don’t know what is going to happen next year.

"It is here and now. Go for it.”

Saturday's Arsenal stories from other newspapers and websites

Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin says that his dream is to play for "a great club" - and that Arsenal fit the bill.

The 24-year-old has been at the heart of the Saints midfield since their Premier League return in 2012, having been part of the furniture at St Mary's since 2008.

And the former Strasbourg schoolboy, who has been watched by Arsenal in recent months, could be ready for a move, according to the Metro.

"It is my dream to one day play at a great club," the Frenchman is reported as saying.

"Arsenal? I have a three year contract, so it will not be easy.

"It’s my dream to one day play at a great club though – so why not?"

Real Sociedad's highly-rated winger Antoine Griezmann has played down reports that he is considering his future at San Sebastian.

The French international, 22, starred for La Real in La Liga last season as they reached the Champions League, and he's been in similarly breathtaking form this term, netting 15 goals in 26 league games.

However, Griezmann, who turns 23 on Friday, says that while he is relaxed about his future, he isn't certain just how long he'll remain in the Basque country.

"PSG, Juventus, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad - I do not know where I will be celebrating my 24th birthday," he said, speaking to El Mundo Deportivo.

"I do not think too much about that. I think about playing at the moment and nothing more.

"I did not say I wanted to leave this club. This is not the time to talk about this stuff."

According to Arsenal's club captain Thomas Vermaelen, Wenger's 1000 games is an "unbelievable" achievement - and that the entire squad want him to stay as manager for as long as possible.

"It's incredible - not a lot of managers do that nowadays because they come in and out, so for him to achieve 1,000 games is something unbelievable," said the Belgian defender, speaking to Sky Sports.

"Everybody wants him to stay as long as he can.

"He's been incredible with what he's done for this club and for the players as well."

And Arsenal and England winger Theo Walcott has also hailed Wenger.

In an interview with BT Sport, Walcott has said that the Arsenal supremo knows the game "inside out" and that he is a "true great."

"He lives and breathes football. He has got everything. It's a massive achievement," said Walcott, about Wenger's 1000th game.

"To get that many games at such a high level and on a consistent basis, with the amount of players he's worked with shows what a true great manager he is.

"He has been in the game for such a long time. He knows it inside out. I can't see anyone getting near to it at that consistent level."
