Jens Lehmann's return to Arsenal has been well-received by fans who have, for some time, been calling for the club's old players to be brought back into the fold.

Former captains Tony Adams and Patrick Vieira both stated their desire to return in some capacity but it was Invincibles' keeper Lehmann who was chosen by Arsene Wenger.

Lehmann, who developed a reputation for having a short fuse during his time in England, does not suffer fools gladly and it is that intensity that persuaded Wenger to approach him.

“He has a demanding attitude and can give his desire to win to the players, to help them achieve their targets,” said Wenger. “That’s what you want from these players.

“He can also give good advice because he has gone through periods where it was not easy for him, where it wasn't all going well, and I believe his rigorous attitude to his career is similar to Per Mertesacker. It’s important that a team is surrounded by people like that.

“He enjoys being involved in training as well, and to experience the pleasure he had when he was giving his best for Arsenal Football Club again. He’s still highly motivated and that motivation never goes. When you want to do things well, I don’t think that ever changes.”

To describe Lehmann merely as 'demanding' or 'wanting to do things well' does not quite do his mentality justice, though.

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Graham Stack, who was a young player at the club during Lehmann's time as No.1, was one of many footballers who saw just how competitive the German could be.

Speaking to Arsenal's website in 2013, Stack said: "He got very upset with me one day in training. We were doing sprints after one of the training sessions, and [coach] Gerry Peyton was the starter. This particular day I beat him, but I was running backwards! I thought he was going to rip my head off!

“It was in front of all the boys, and I was celebrating like mad. Thierry [Henry] and some of the others cracked up, and Jens didn’t like it one bit, so he challenged me to a triathlon. I was up for it but it never happened. I think he realised he didn’t want to pick up an injury in a silly challenge like that!”
