Mesut Ozil does want to stay at Arsenal, despite failing to agree a new deal.

That is the opinion of Arsene Wenger.

The German’s current deal with Arsenal expires in the summer of 2018, meaning that the three-time FA Cup winner could walk away for free amidst reported interest from Manchester United, report football.london.

Wenger responded to that speculation this week by admitting that the club could cash in on the former Real Madrid attacker in January, along with Alexis Sanchez.

However, the Frenchman has since admitted that Ozil could be open to agreeing a new deal at The Emirates.

He said: “I cannot tell you what is in his mind. I genuinely think he wants to stay. But I am always positive about that."

Ozil is yet to score or provide an assist in his six Premier League appearances so far this season, but still boasts an impressive record in North London.

Since signing for the club four years ago, he has contributed 57 assists in 166 games, meaning that he has created one goal for a teammate in every three games he plays.

Wenger added: “We live in the world where people have opinions and sometimes they are right and sometimes they are not always proven right on the longer period.

“You need players who have quality and Ozil is one of the best players in the world.”

The 28-year-old endured a disappointing return to first team action, with his substitute appearance against Watford resulting in defeat.

Ozil missed a glorious chance to make it 2-0 to Arsenal, before the Hornets won a penalty almost immediately after.
