Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger claimed his side's 2-2 with Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday was "a fair result".

The Reds took the lead on the cusp of half-time through Philippe Coutinho, but they were pegged back almost immediately by Mathieu Debuchy's header.

Olivier Giroud then escaped the attention of Liverpool's three centre-backs to rifle home in the second half.

Martin Skrtel's head injury resulted in nine minutes of added time at Anfield, and substitute Fabio Borini was given his marching orders for two bookings in quick succession.

Skrtel restored parity seven minutes into stoppage time with a superb header from an Adam Lallana corner before both sides pressed for a late winner in a breathless finish.

Wenger told the BBC: "It was maybe a fair result, but we are disappointed to give a goal away with a free header from a corner. It was an intense game.

"We played a little bit with a handbrake in the first half. Liverpool played well. We lost the ball too quickly in the first half - when you are not used to something it was frustrating.

"In the long stoppage time you have to survive two three corners and free-kicks. For their goal, we had plenty of defenders on the pitch. It's disappointing that we didn't even jump. You want everybody to be focused on the corner."

The Gunners host Queens Park Rangers on Boxing Day.
