Arsenal's stars will get a chance to spend time with their families for Christmas - but the squad will train as normal this morning.

Arsene Wenger said he always gets his Gunners squad into London Colney early on the 25th to ensure they can get away early.

But while they are there, the Frenchman will insist their eyes remain on getting three points at St Mary's.

“The day is completely focused on football,” he told Arsenal Player . “We don’t have a real Christmas but we have Christmas the whole year, so we can pay back the people who sit at home.

“There’s two Christmas Days. In England, it is on December 25 so on the day we practice a bit earlier to give English players time to be back early.

“In my country and the Latin countries, Christmas usually happens on December 24 in the evening.

"We adapt to the English schedule because we are in England, so on the 25th we practice a bit earlier to get people home for their Christmas lunch.”

Meanwhile, Wenger believes that teams are more physical than they used to be - meaning possession does not always win.

And that is why he thinks more teams are enjoying success on the road this campaign.

Wenger's Arsenal teams have bossed the possession statistics over the past 15 years of the Premier League and have enjoyed relative success playing that way.

The Gunners enjoyed just 37 per cent of the ball in their 2-1 win over Manchester City on Monday night.

And across the Premier League, teams enjoying less possession of the ball are winning more often this season.

Throughout the 2015-16 season, the average possession of the team that goes on to win a game of football is just 49.2 per cent - a significant drop from the 52.8 per cent in 2011-12.

"It looks like it is linked with a trend that possession is not rewarded any more like it was before," said Wenger.

"This is the first year that possession does not give you the win like before. Teams are better organised, better prepared physical, in the last 20 minutes.
