Arsene Wenger has defended his hiring policy at Arsenal, saying former players have no right to return to the club just because they used to play there.

It comes on the back of former captain Tony Adams' condemnation of Wenger's coaching.

Adams said Wenger "couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag" and that the Gunners boss did not want his former captain back at the club in a coaching capacity.

Wenger hit back at Adams, and offered his opinions that some of those suggested chose to leave the club "when it was their interest to go somewhere else" and that when he leaves the Emirates, he would never expect to just walk back in.

“We had him [Adams' here to work for a while with the youth team,” Wenger offered. “He decided to go to China and now he is in Granada.”

Wenger has been criticised by a number of former stars for not bringing more ex-players into the club's coaching staff when they retire.

Wenger has been particularly criticised for not bringing ex-skipper Patrick Vieira into the fold, with the Frenchman now under the City Football Group umbrella, working as head coach at New York City FC.

But the Gunners boss says his former charges have no right to walk into a job just because of their career as a player.

“I just think at a football club you want people to help you do the job. You have to employ people who can help you to be successful.

“If I leave tomorrow Arsenal Football Club I have no right to come back, because I have worked here,” Wenger said on Friday.

“You have to be needed. If you have made a career as a player somewhere, it doesn’t give you any divine right to come back. Because all the players, at some stage, they decide to leave, when their interest was to leave.

"It is not like some players have never left the club. When it was their interest to go somewhere else, they went somewhere else.”
