Brighton striker Tomer Hemed has been banned for three matches after a violent conduct charge against him was found proven following Sunday's match against Newcastle, the Football Association has announced.

Hemed appeared to stamp on DeAndre Yedlin during the Seagulls' win over Rafa Benitez's side at the Amex.

Toon boss Rafa Benitez was furious with referee Andre Marriner for allowing the Israeli forward’s 50th-minute winner.

After the match, Hemed said he didn't mean to make contact with Yedlin.

He said: “I felt something on my calf. I didn’t see anything. Whether it was accidental or not, it doesn’t really matter now but I’m sure whoever is on the committee that punishes that sort of thing will figure it out.”

Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness said: “I think that might come back to bite him.”

Because the referee didn't spot the incident, it opened the door for potential retrospective action.

The FA directive is: "Off the ball incidents which are not seen at the time by the match officials are referred to a panel of three former elite referees.

"Each referee panel member will review the video footage independently of one another to determine whether they consider it a sending-off offence.

"For retrospective action to be taken, and an FA charge to follow, the decision of the panel must be unanimous."
