Ian Wright is at the centre of a war of words with Arsenal fans following the 3-1 defeat to Manchester United on the weekend.

The Gunners legend argued with supporters of the north London club, who complained of Match of Day bias towards Arsenal on Twitter.

As numerous heated debates threatened to spiral out of control, Wright took to Twitter to post an aplogy.

"As a player I wore my heart on my sleeve & that hasn't changed as an ex-player," he wrote to his 1.4million followers.

"I apologise unreservedly for my unfair comments which I made in anger after receiving an untold amount of stick."

The comments Wright is referring to appear to be ones aimed at an oversees fan, after the Arsenal legend brought attention to him being a "million miles away".

Some Gunners supporters responded to the tweet by dubbing Wright "disrespectful", while others suggested he may have been hacked.

Following the apology Wright continued to receive angry tweets from a section of the Gunners fanbase, prompting him to pen a second short statement.

"Judging by the response to my apology it seems to me that some of you have used this incident to have a go!" he wrote.

"You're the ***** you're the reason we are a laughingstock on here.

"To the AFC fans who I love and have shown me love, you're the reason I love Arsenal with all my heart."

Since this statement Match of the Day host Gary Lineker leaped to Wright's defence, tweeting: "This fella loves Arsenal.

"When he is critical of them it's because he cares. We are generally all more critical of the team we support, but when others criticise we tend to protect and defend them. Human nature. A TV show doesn't hate any team btw."

Piers Morgan did the same, writing: "Arsenal fans attacking Ian Wright should be ashamed of themselves.

"One of the greatest players to ever wear the AFC shirt whose only crime is speaking the truth about the state of our club.
