Davinson Sanchez will wonder what all the fuss surrounding the Premier League is about.

The raw 21-year-old was given a surprise Spurs debut by boss Mauricio Pochettino, without the customary acclimatisation period required for young players coming from a very different football culture.

Yet if ever a Colombian who plied his trade in Holland could be described as an English-type player, then it is this imposing centre half, who announced himself within second of kick off by smashing into the back of Sandro, taking ball and man with ruthless efficiency.

And so the tone was set for his afternoon....no nonsense, no prisoners, no quarter given. Poor Sandro was left remonstrating in Latin fashion, gesturing that the defender was continually fouling.

Sanchez responded with a shrug, and what appeared to be some simple advice to toughen up – and perhaps even Everton boss Ronald Koeman shared that sentiment, because he hauled his Spanish striker off at half time.

That was perhaps the perfect comment on the Tottenham man's debut, because he didn't give the Blues striker a kick, unless you count the ones on the back of his calves.

In truth, Everton is this form were no match for Spurs, their resistance utterly broken the moment Harry Kane's cross deceived Jordan Pickford and floated into the roof of the net, and the question from there was how many for the visitors.

Yet Sanchez appears to relish defending, and without Sandro to wind up, he turned his attentions to Everton's young England forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who was given the same uncompromising treatment.

The Colombian doesn't seem overly comfortable in possession yet, but it is early days, and he was clearly bought for his defending, pure and simple. On this admittedly limited evidence, he relishes that challenge, and Tottenham fans can hope their manager has found yet another gem.
