Football fans are being fooled by a fake 'Rio Ferdinand' tweet to Wayne Rooney that was posted to Twitter this Friday.

The tweet, posted from the bogus account @RioFerdyyy5, reads: "Not anymore thanks..." and was written in response to Rooney's infamous tweet back in 2011, which read: "Hi rio u want picking up in the morning pal".

Thousands of people have taken to sharing the message, believing it was posted by the real Ferdinand, whose official Twitter account has the handle @RioFerdy5.

The tweet emerged online after MirrorSportexclusively revealed that Rooney was arrested shortly after 2am and was later charged with driving whilst over the prescribed limit.

The 31-year-old later moved on to cocktail bar Symposium in nearby Wilmslow before he was pulled over and taken to a local police station and quizzed by officers.

The Everton forward has been released on bail and is due to appear at Stockport Magistrates' Court on September 18 - the day after his first return to Old Trafford since he left for the Toffees.
