Jack Butland is facing six weeks on the sidelines after breaking a finger in training ahead of England's game with Germany.

Butland will now return to Stoke City even though Gareth Southgate was ready to rotate the keepers between the England friendlies with Germany and Brazil.

Southgate wants to give Butland and Jordan Pickford experience and was ready to stand Joe Hart down for both games despite telling him he is his No1.

It is the latest setback for Southgate, who has been left without a host of players for the friendlies.

Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling - all of whom are likely to start in Russia - have been ruled out.

Harry Winks was also expected to feature but has also pulled out of the squad, as has Fabian Delph.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek will be given his full debut against Germany at Wembley.

Southgate tried to call up Chelsea’s Danny Drinkwater but the midfielder turned it down after claiming he was not fit enough.

"I spoke to Danny earlier in the week but he feels he is not fit enough to play," Southgate told the BBC.

Southgate added that he is relishing the chance of seeing a number of new faces - including youngsters Tammy Abraham and Joe Gomez - following their ascension from the Under-21s.

"This period between qualification and the finals has to have an element of experimentation," Southgate told a news conference on Thursday.

"If we don't try things in these games, when are we going to try things? Germany took a really young team to the Confederations Cup - I thought it was brilliant what they did.

"I've really enjoyed the week. New players coming in and two great games to look forward to. We'll take more from these games than any of the qualification games."
