Harry Kane sent Gareth Southgate’s plane awful England to Russia with a last-gasp winner.

The red-hot Spurs hitman struck four minutes into added time with the knives out for Southgate after the Three Lions ground out a 1-0 victory over Slovenia with their worst display for a long while.

Captain Kane admitted afterwards: “It was frustrating out there. We had to be patient. But I am happy to put one into the back of the net at the end.

“We have qualified, and that’s all that matters. We had to be patient and in the last 10 minutes they were getting tired.

“It’s no easy feat these days (to qualify for a World Cup). We’re all delighted. We have another game on Sunday (away to Lithuania to complete the group phase) and we need to keep doing what we’re doing and working hard.”

Supporters made paper aeroplanes out of their team-sheets and flew them in the Wembley stands as Southgate’s men struggled to break down Slovenia.

One plane even made it down to the area by the dug-outs, close to where manager Southgate had been standing.

Many fans left the stadium long before the end while one fan sneaked by bored stewards and made it onto the pitch, racing past players before being collared.

The crowd then jeered the announcement of England keeper Joe Hart - who was lucky not to have given away a third-minute penalty - as Man of the Match.

Asked about his critics, Hart said: “Do you think I care about them? I would have a big problem if I cared about them.

“We’ve qualified for the World Cup. That’s a big deal.

“The guys were brilliant today.

“We wore them down. It was difficult for the crowd, but we appreciate them coming. We’re really happy. The team have always got my back and I have theirs.”

Southgate had assured the nation in the build-up that his men wanted to end their World Cup qualifying campaign in style.

But despite dominating possession, England managed just three attempts on target before Kane’s 14th goal of the season and his eighth in his last four games.

It means Southgate now goes to Lithuania able to field squad players and rest key men as qualification has been secured.
