Eric Dier has spoken of the dream scenario that will be the finale to a season that promises so much.

The Tottenham star has made a significant contribution to England's qualification for the World Cup finals in Russia next summer.

That place was secured in a laboured victory over a highly-organised Slovenia outfit at Wembley last Thursday.

And at club level, Spurs have made an impressive start. They were in third place in the Premier League going into the international break, they are still in the League Cup with a clash at Wembley against West Ham, two wins have been recorded in the Champions League and come January, the FA Cup campaign will start.

It could end in glory on all fronts and the ever-reliant Dier -who was a summer target for Manchester United – afforded himself the glimpse of what could be a memorable nine months.

A Premier League and Champions League double with Spurs and a successful World Cup with England ? “That is really what I dream of,” said the versatile Dier who is a go-to man for Mauricio Pochettino at Spursand for Gareth Southgate with England.

Right back … central defender … midfield holding role : Dier looks accomplished in all three.

“Winning the Premier League and then win something for England.”

But there is also a streak of realism where Dier is concerned. “There is so much that will happen before the World Cup. You just never know what is going to happen and that is one of the things I have learned.”

One cruel lesson came in the European Championships last year when England slumped to a shock defeat to Iceland. “No, France wasn't a good experience,” he admitted. “ As a team we have a lot to prove to everyone – and we have to prove a lot of people wrong as well.”

And England do have a talisman in Harry Kane. Who else but Kane was going to get that injury time winner against Slovenia.

“He is fantastic,” said Dier of his Spurs teammate. “He scored at the end and showed such great desire to get in there and score. That's what Harry does, isn't it ?”

Dier is under no illusion about the status of the World Cup. “It is exciting to be there because it is not just one of the biggest football events but a world sporting event as well. I want to be part of it.”

And England will take a squad with growing maturity to Russia – as they illustrated against the stubborn Slovenians.
“We kept going and we didn't panic,” said Dier. “It was a frustrating night, I won't deny that. They defended well and I think they had only conceded four goals before last Thursday. They were hard to break down but our persistence paid off.”

Dier's first World Cup memory was not a good one for England and one David Seaman will want to forget. It was Ronaldinho's freakish strike for Brazil against England in Japan in 2002.

“I don't know why but I just remember that,” said Dier.

The goal provided one of many abject headlines concerning England and international football over the years.
Dier hopes any from Russia will be of the more positive variety.
