All you need to know about Ostersunds

There’s a feel of the FA Cup about the Europa League last-32, as an underdog English manager gets his time in the spotlight at the Emirates.

Arsenal have been pitted against Swedish minnows Ostersunds, who are led by former York defender Graham Potter.

The 42-year-old, who made one appearance for England Under-21s in 1996, took over Ostersunds in 2011 and has not looked back since.

Potter has overseen a remarkable rise, taking the Jamtland region side all the way from the fourth tier to European football - and they don’t want to stop at the Europa League.

Graham Potter: Fergie's nemesis?

OK, so nemesis is a bit (a lot) of a stretch, but the Ostersund manager was on the field when Manchester United suffered one of their worst ever losses under Sir Alex Ferguson.

The full-back was a substitute when Southampton saw off the Red Devils 6-3 in October 1996, one of ten appearances he made for Saints that season.

And here’s some more knowledge on the Brit, who I dare say you’ll be hearing plenty more of in the coming weeks...

Tough tie for Celtic

Celtic face Robeto Mancini’s Zenit side in their last-32 clash, which will be a tricky test from Brendan Rodgers and company.

Other eye-catching ties from this draw are Borussia Dortmund vs Atalanta, Napoli vs RB Leipzig and Lyon vs Villarreal.

Here’s a stat for Arsenal fans to hang their hat on...

Interesting draw for Arsenal

Östersunds may not been the most well known team in Europe - heck, Arsene Wenger has been Arsenal manager for longer than the 21-year-old Swedish side have been in existence - but there’s a fair few narrative threads to pull at here.

Former England Under-21 international Graham Potter has been the club’s manager since 2011, during which time he has dragged them up from the fourth tier of Swedish football into the top flight.

They also have a couple of British platers in their ranks - Jamie Hopcutt, formerly of York City and Ossett Town, plus Curtis Edwards, who was playing for tenth-tier Thornaby back in 2015.

Needless to say, this will be Östersunds’ biggest ever game.

Who are Arsenal hoping to avoid?

This is the stage where the eight Champions League dropouts enter the fray.

The top four ranked sides who have been exiled from Europe’s bigger competition have been seeded, so Arsenal cannot face Atletico Madrid, CSKA Moscow, RB Leipzig or Sporting Lisbon.

But they could face Borussia Dortmund, Celtic, Napoli or Spartak Moscow, none of whom would be idea.

Right, we’re almost underway.

How this one works...

If you were paying attention to this morning’s other draw, then excuse me for teaching you how to suck eggs, but here’s a quick reminder of his it works.

There are two pots again here as the 32 sides are grouped into 16 seeded and 16 unseeded groups.

As earlier in the Champions League you can’t draw a team you played in the group stage or one from your own country.

Teams from Russia and Ukraine are kept apart, to avoid a diplomatic can of worms from being opened.

Ties are played on Februay 15 and 22, with the seeded sides home in the second leg.

Simple.

Not long now to the balls are plucked..

Celtic also waiting on the draw

Arsenal are not the only British team waiting to find out their Europa League opponents.

Scottish champions Celtic are also in the draw, by virtue of finishing third in their Champions League group.

Their European campaign has been a bit of a disaster so far, with heavy defeats to PSG, and Bayern Munich, as well as a defeat to Anderlecht.

But by virtue of goal difference, they have pipped the Belgian side into Europe’s secondary competition.

Celtic can indeed draw Arsenal, which would be fun.

Wenger: Defence is still haunted

Martin Keown was not the only Arsenal defender who failed to turn up at St Mary’s yesterday.

The BT Sport pundit was caught in snow on the M40 and, as if to show solidarity with the former Gunner, the current rearguard also went missing as Charlie Austin scored after 128 seconds.

Yet Arsene Wenger did not blame the biting weather for getting caught cold.

The Gunners manager reckoned his defenders were still haunted by what happened against Manchester United a week earlier, when they were 2-0 down inside 11 minutes.

“Last week had an influence on today’s game – it took us time to get into the game again,” he said.

“I felt that the Manchester United game was still in the heads of our defenders. That’s why sometimes it’s not too good to talk about a problem because you create even a bigger one.”

Who can Arsenal come up against?

As a Europa League group stage winner, Arsenal know they will not face one of these seeded sides, so will avoid Atletico Madrid, CSKA Moscow, RB Leipzig and Sporting Lisbon.

However, they could face Borussia Dortmund, Celtic, Napoli or Spartak Moscow, who join from the Champions League.

Keown sums up Arsenal fans' thoughts on Wilshere

Martin Keown has perfectly summed up the thoughts of most Arsenal fans with his latest comments on Jack Wilshere.

The former Gunners centre-back heaped praise on the midfielder’s performance in Arsenal’s 6-0 win over BATE Borisov on Thursday.

Wilshere, who has been a bit-part player for the north London side over the past few seasons, played the full 90 minutes of the Europa League clash.

The Englishman put in a man of the match performance, and even got on the scoresheet - his first since 2015 - netting Arsenal’s third moments before the break.

Discussing Wilshere after the game, Keown told BT Sport 2: “I’m a big admirer of his. I know it’s not great opposition [BATE] but look at his vision.

“He’s the one player in this group who can break into that A team, so to speak. It’s the driving runs from midfield.

“He’s convincing me now that he’s fitter now than he has been. He’s got everything in the locker. The movement, the deft touches.

“Wilshere said he was doing his best to give boss Wenger reason to start him in the Premier League.

“All we can do when we get the opportunity is show what we can do. We have to support the boys because at the end of the day we’re all Arsenal”.
