Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard hit home stunners to hand Manchester United a much-needed three points.

French forward Martial, filling in up front, curled home from outside of the box during the second half to sink Everton.

And Lingard produced a moment of brilliance of his own as he fired past a helpless Jordan Pickford from a similar distance.

The win ends United's run of three consecutive draws in the Premier League and consigns Everton to their second straight defeat.

Here are five key talking points from the game...

1. Lukaku and Zlatan's absence was noticeable

United came into the fixture against Everton without the services of Romelu Lukaku and Zlatan Ibrahimovic due to injury.

Anthony Martial was tasked with leading the line, but the absence of a recognised central striker left United looking bereft of ideas in the final third.

The Frenchman did get the decisive first goal in one moment of quality - but it ultimately came from outside of the box.

Martial regularly found himself drifting out to his natural wide left position, with Juan Mata or Jesse Lingard often having fill the gap in the middle.

The lack of tactical nous left United short in and around the penalty area. Thankfully for them, they had plenty of quality outside the box.

2. Everton's pace could add another dimension

One of the major issues during the first few months of the season was the lack of pace within the Everton side.

The likes of Wayne Rooney and Gylfi Sigurdsson have often been asked to fill in on the flanks but against United, Sam Allardyce went with two out-and-out wingers.

Yannick Bolasie's return couldn't have come soon enough but it was a surprise to see Nikola Vlasic come back in from the cold.

The pair, along with Oumar Niasse, give Everton a different dimension and will be vital if they are to push higher up the table.

3. Shaw back in Jose's good books

For the third time in seven days, Luke Shaw was started by Jose Mourinho.

After being exiled for so long, Mourinho finally looks to have faith in the former Southampton left-back once again.

He might not be the long-term answer for United and the jury is still out on his performances.

But it's positive to see Shaw being trusted once again - at least he's finding a level of consistency.

4. Rooney played with a point to prove

Against his former employers, Wayne Rooney was one of the most influential Everton players on the pitch.

He's not the most elegant to watch anymore, but the former England captain was very workmanlike in his performance in the middle of the park.

Rooney put in the sort of midfield performance that Paul Pogba would have been proud of for United.

As is the norm these days given his age, there was no surprise he was taken off on the hour mark given the effort he put in.

5. Pogba shows why United paid the big money

Paul Pogba was nothing short of sublime during the second half.

United needed a playmaker and he stepped up to the plate. Everything they did came through him.

On the ball, he was a joy to watch as he continually opened up spaces in the Everton back-line.

Consistency just seems to be his problem - and surely that will only come with age.
