Everton have released an image of Wayne Rooney in a new kit - on the day he was charged with drink driving.

Mirror Sport exclusively revealed Rooney had been arrested, before Cheshire police confirmed he will appear at Stockport Magistrates' Court on September 18. - one day after his first return to former club Manchester United as a visiting player.

England's all-time record scorer was stopped by police near his home in Cheshire, in Wilmslow, driving a black Volkswagen Beetle at approximately 2am.

But despite the controversy, the Toffees decided to post an image of the striker in the new commemorative shirt.

The tweet said: Our commemorative kit! Get yours today."

Alongside Rooney in the kit is a quote from Rooney reading: "It's a place where I grew up watching football and I always dreamt of playing here."

The message was quickly deleted after the club realised their faux pas.

The Toffees re-signed Rooney this summer having spent 14 years at Manchester United - where he claimed their goal scoring record.

Fans were furious at the club's decision to tweet the picture of Rooney, one supporter claiming that the move was a "PR disaster."
