Wayne Rooney has been read the riot act by Everton boss Ronald Koeman but he has a supporter in the form of massive football fan Rod Stewart.

The former England captain is on his last warning at the Toffees and has some questions to answer from his wife Colleen after his recent arrest when driving the car of a woman he met at a bar.

But his status among the elite of English football should remain in tact, says Stewart.

The legendary singer and die-hard Celtic fan said Rooney remained a "credit to English football" when asked about the footballer's situation by TMZ.

"He's been a great English football [player] and we all make mistakes," Stewart added in an interview through his car window in Los Angeles.

"And he's still a great guy. A great influence on all the youngsters."

Rooney has been told he'll be closely monitored during international breaks following his drunken night out last week.

He spoke with manager Ronald Koeman on Tuesday for the first time since his arrest for drink-driving in Alderley Edge, Cheshire.

Koeman will not allow that to happen again and Everton will review Rooney’s training regime for the rest of the season.

The Dutchman accepts Rooney deserves time off. The question is how to use it and this will be carefully scheduled. Rooney was given a final warning by Koeman during showdown talks.

The Blues boss is a strict disciplinarian and feels let down by Rooney because he warned him to behave before the club re-signed him from Manchester United in July.

But Koeman will not punish Rooney, for now, as it is understood the club will wait until the case is concluded.

Rooney is due to appear before Stockport Magistrates Court on September 18. The Blues do not want to prejudice Rooney’s defence by fining him two weeks’ wages.
