Manchester United are set to give their fringe players a run out when they take on Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have been in imperious form in the Premier League so far this season, scoring 16 goals en route to four wins from five games while they also opened their Champions League campaign with a convincing win over Basel.

Jose Mourinho is likely to rest the stars who have been instrumental in United's outstanding start meaning the reserves and youngsters will get a chance to impress.

United last faced Burton in 2006 when the Championship outfit were still a non-league side, and were held to an embarrassing goalless draw away from home in the third round of the FA Cup before easing to a 5-0 home win in the replay.

Here are some of the players who could be given a game by Mourinho, according to the Manchester Evening News .

Luke Shaw

The left back injured his foot against Swansea last April but Mourinho updated his medical bulletin last week to say he was “not injured any more.”

The 22-year-old has played three Under 23 matches for Ricky Sbragia's side but was beaten back into the first team by Ashley Young who played at left back against Everton.

“It’s a question of form, it’s a question of option but he’s recovered,” the Reds' boss has said.

Now he has the option to bring him back and take the next step. It would appear to be a kick in the teeth if Shaw wasn't included in the starting XI against Burton.

Angel Gomes

It is 23 years this week since Sir Alex Ferguson risked the wrath of the country and the Football League by playing an alleged 'weakened' side against Port Vale in the League Cup naming youngsters like Paul Scholes, David Beckham and Gary Neville at Vale Park.

The decision even led to questions in Parliament! But Fergie was a pioneer and now it is the norm.

Gomes is fast becoming the most exciting stand out performer in the Under 18s and whet the Old Trafford support with a sub cameo in that Crystal Palace finale last season.

The 17-year-old recently helped engineer a remarkable comeback against Arsenal for the academy side when they were 3-0 down only to win 4-3.

Scott McTominay

The 20-year-old midfielder had two sniffs of senior action at the end of last season as Mourinho rested his first team in readiness for the Europa League final. He came on briefly as a sub against Arsenal and started against Crystal Palace in the final Premier League match of the campaign.

This season, as a result of Andreas Pereira going out on loan to Valencia, McTominay has been promoted to the first team squad and officially given the number 39 shirt.

Michael Carrick

The 36-year-old veteran was appointed new United captain in the wake of Wayne Rooney's departure to Everton but has yet to play a minute this season.

He had to watch from the stands for the first three games of the campaign but has been on the bench as an unused sub against Stoke, Basel and Everton.

The experienced, wily midfielder will be a useful weapon for Mourinho as the season progresses and the Reds can draw on his know how but he needs games now to keep him ticking over.

Sergio Romero

The Argentina international has been a dependable understudy to David De Gea since joining United in 2015, but being behind one of the best keepers in the world has seen Romero's game time largely limited to appearances in various cup competitions.

An impressive record of 12 clean sheets in 18 starts last season helped the 30-year-old keep his place in the side throughout the Europa League campaign, including the victory over Ajax in the final.

He is yet to make an appearance this season, but has been included in the squad for every match so far.
