Nemanja Vidic ensured Giuseppe Rossi's first cup final would be one he never forgets.

The Italian wasn't involved as Manchester United thrashed Wigan 4-0 in the 2006 League Cup final at the Millennium Stadium, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Rossi had started the first three games on United's run to Cardiff, but was denied a place on the podium.

However, the 19-year-old’s contribution had not been forgotten and new signing Vidic had a surprise for him after the 4-0 win against Wigan at the Millennium Stadium.

Pulling him aside, the Serbian handed him his medal.

"Nemanja told me I deserved it more than him. I was shocked because I wasn't expecting that, but that's another story I won't forget from my United days."

The pint-sized striker made the move to Manchester just 18 months previously as a wide-eyed 16-year-old with a Ralph Lauren t-shirt and baggy jeans.

Signing his contract at Carrington on that balmy day in July, the whole Rossi family were with him to meet Ferguson - his father, Fernando, mother, Cleotilde, and sister, Tina.

Rossi went on to make just 14 first-team appearances under the wily Scot, but he has nothing but positive memories of him.

"He was a great human being," he gushes.

"I like to always see the human aspect of the person and he showed great respect to his players and everyone working around Carrington - the groundsmen, cafeteria people, youth coaches, etc.

"That's what stood out the most because in high-profile positions, it's easy to lose sight of the little things - but not Sir Alex.

"That's why I have tremendous respect and admiration for him."
