Angry Arsene Wenger ended 2017 with a double blast at Premier League refereeing and top-flight scheduling.

The Gunners boss was fuming after his side conceded an 89th minute penalty to draw 1-1 at lowly West Brom.

Wenger insisted Calum Chambers shouldn't have been penalised for a deliberate handball on Kieran Gibbs' cross.

And he is not happy Arsenal are back in action again on Wednesday at Chelsea, who get an extra day's rest.

The Frenchman, who also criticised pundit Thierry Henry, stormed: “Two things that are not normal in the Premier League is the schedule and referees.

“It wasn't a penalty. There was no handball. It was not a deliberate handball.

“He didn't lift his hand. It was down there.

“Where do you put your hands? You have no pockets in your shorts.

“The referee has not seen it. That's my opinion.

“I'm angry because we have seen the same things again.

“I did fight very hard for the referees to become professional many years ago but I see no improvement.

“There are two countries in Europe where you have professional referees, in Italy and in England, and not one English referee will go to the World Cup.

“But we cannot say a word against it because they're untouchable.”

Jay Rodriguez converted the penalty to cancel out Alexis Sanchez's deflected free-kick six minutes earlier.

All Arsenal's outfield players celebrated it together after ex-star Henry, now a TV pundit, claimed a previous celebration at Crystal Palace showed a split in the camp.

But Wenger added: “There are some people who want always to create problems but I don’t listen to what he says.

“All these people are paid to talk and it is difficult always talk and only say things that are true and intelligent.”

Wenger's side return to action on Wednesday at home to Chelsea.

He said: “You cannot have West Brom to prepare five days for a game like that, we have three.

“I am ready to play every day as long as our opponent has played the same time recovery over Christmas. It is not normal.
“We have the same problem against Chelsea. They played yesterday, we played today, they have one day more again.”
