Garth Crooks has slammed Jose Mourinho and accused him of "knowing nothing of Manchester United's history".
The pundit hit out at the Red Devils boss in his BBC column this week, in which he also criticised the Portuguese for suggesting a lack of purchasing power has prevented him from achieving more at the club.
Mourinho recently made comments about Manchester City splashing the cash, making his job of catching them extremely difficult.
But conveniently glossed over the fact that he himself has spent nearly £180million on just two players - Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku.
"What I find extraordinary about Mourinho is his audacity," Crooks told the BBC.
"To even suggest a lack of purchasing power has somehow limited his ability to be more successful is a stretch even for him. Mourinho has spent the best part of £300m and has arguably [when all fit] the best squad in the league."
Manchester United have a history of developing talented players, and their Class of '92 are regularly praised as setting this benchmark.
But Mourinho has generally looked to ready-made superstars during his tenure, signing the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Nemanja Matic, for example.
That said, he has developed the games of Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, something Crooks is apparently reluctant to praise.
"Mourinho seems to know everything about money but nothing of Manchester United's history. United have a legacy of producing homegrown talent," he added.
"As for Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford, they both came gift-wrapped for Mourinho and there is more where that came from if he's prepared to look.
"There is no doubt Mourinho can take great players and make them into a great team. But not since his days at Porto has he created a team out of nothing.
"I wonder, is the great man losing his touch?"
