Arsene Wenger will equal Sir Alex Ferguson’s record for most games as a Premier League manager when Arsenal take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

The Frenchman’s 810th game since taking charge of the Gunners in 1996 moves him alongside the long-serving former Manchester United boss.

And Wenger will surpass the Scot by taking charge of the game at West Brom on New Year’s Eve – the day of Ferguson’s 76th birthday.

Here, Mirror Football's chief football reporter John Cross pinpoints a selection Wenger's highs and lows during his time at Arsenal before looking at a comparison of stats between the Gunners boss and the Old Trafford great...

HIGHS

The Invincibles

Wenger’s greatest achievement in football, to steer Arsenal to the title in 2004 without losing a game.

1998 Double

Wenger became the first ever foreign manager to win the title - and completed it with the FA Cup Double in his first full season.

LOWS

Champions League failure

Losing the 2006 Champions League final. Not enjoying European success at Arsenal is his biggest career regret.

Abou Diaby

This is a bit left field. But injury (the worst suffered in a horror tackle five months after joining in 2006) stifled a player he regarded as the next Patrick Vieira, the midfielder he never managed to replace.

Love hate relationship with the fans

It reached boiling point during the 2016/17 run-in when fans flew banners and Wenger admitted later: “We played some games in a hostile environment and I cannot accept that.”
