Romelu Lukaku celebrated scoring his record 10th goal in qualifying to book Belgium's place at the World Cup finals by calling his mum.

The Manchester United star netted a 74th-minute header to beat Greece and open up an eight-point lead at the top of Group H.

Roberto Martinez's side are the first European team to guarantee a place in Russia.

And the £75m striker said: “I celebrated our qualification first by getting down on my knees and praying. I thanked God for all he has done for my team and me.

"And then I called my mum (Adolphine). It is better to celebrate qualification modestly rather than in a euphoric manner as if we were the champions of the world.

“Let's stop talking about the World Cup until June. Let's try to reach the highest possible levels at our clubs so we are ready.”

Captain Jan Vertonghen opened the scoring before Greece equalised in a fiery encounter in Athens. And after his winner, Lukaku put his hand to his ears to mock the home the fans.

“The defender was irritating, verbally as much as physically,” he said.

“But I don't care – I won and he lost. And the crowd also acted in an irritating way towards me. I had lasers shone in my eyes but I expected it. What is great in football is to win in conditions like this. We showed maturity in difficult conditions.”

Lukaku has now scored 24 international goals (not counting three in a friendly against Luxembourg) – and netted a double against Croatia in 2013 when they sealed their place in the last World Cup. “If I have scored so much, it is down to my team-mates,” he said.
