Burnley felt they were denied a stonewall penalty as these two sides ended their great 2017 with this stalemate.

Burnley were adamant Jeff Hendrick was clipped by Jonas Lossl as the Irishman rounded the Huddersfield goalkeeper.

Referee Paul Tierney disagreed and Burnley picked up another point on the road to round off their best year since the early 70s.

Huddersfield can also look back on 2017 with great pride and Town are enjoying their best campaign since the early 1950s.

Burnley’s game plan was to let Huddersfield have most of the ball, while they turned it over to create the better chances.

It worked and Johann Berg Gudmundsson carved open the Town defence before shooting just wide before Steven Defour dragged an effort the wrong side of the post.

Huddersfield barely threatened after an early Collin Quaner shot, which was saved by Nick Pope.

The Clarets kept up the pressure and Scott Arfield wriggled his way through, only for his shot to be saved by Lossl.

Then came the game’s moment of controversy just after the hour mark when Hendrick went down as he rounded Lossl near the goalline.

Despite Burnley’s protests that Lossl took him out with his trailing right leg, Tierney was unmoved and pointed to the six-yard box for a goalkick.

Welcome

Burnley boss Sean Dyche checked the size of Manchester United’s Old Trafford pitch ahead of their Boxing Day clash.

The Clarets manager revealed he wanted to ensure the Red Devils were not attempting to seek an advantage with an over-sized pitch.

Every pitch in the Premier League is between 105m in length and 69m in width, to 100m in length and 64m in width.

The pitch at Old Trafford is 105m in length, 68m in width with an area of 7,140m2 - exactly the same as Burnley’s Turf Moor pitch.

Ensuring this was still the case, Dyche checked the dimensions ahead of his sides fixture on Tuesday, and explained precisely his reasons after the game.

“Well, because there is a standard size now,” said the Burnley boss, when asked what he was hoping to gain from checking the pitch.

“So home advantage is not a home advantage any more, every pitch needs to be the same size.

“So I check it out to reassure myself they all are the same size and [make sure] the players know that.”
