Jamie Carragher has branded the Arsenal squad as cowards after they were humiliated at Liverpool.

The Gunners were hit for four at Anfield with Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Daniel Sturridge all getting on the scoresheet.

Fans called for manager Arsene Wenger's exit from the stands as they watched their team's capitulation and second Premier League defeat on the bounce.

Former Liverpool captain Carragher was left stunned by the dismal Arsenal performance - and didn't hold back in his criticism.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: "Last season I called them cowards and I got a lot of criticism saying that I was too strong, 'You can't say that on TV'.

"I'll say it again... cowards!"

Arsenal never looked like getting back into the game after going behind in the early stages.

The return of Alexis Sanchez did little to inspire the Arsenal team, with Mesut Ozil also putting in an anonymous performance.

But Carragher believes that Arsenal's problems lie away from the pitch.

"From top to bottom at the football club, starting with the owner, chief executive, manger, players, there's a lack of ruthlessness," he said in the immediate aftermath of the game.

"The board bottled the decision over this summer.

"They were terrified of moving the manager on, who has been a legend and a great success there.

"There had to be a change and they bottled it."
