Jose Mourinho aimed a sly dig at Liverpool after Manchester United's win over Watford on Tuesday night.

Ashley Young's double and a strike from Anthony Martial put the Red Devils in a commanding lead, only for the Hornets to hit back twice after the break to ensure a nervy finish.

However, Jesse Lingard's fine solo strike wrapped up victory for the visitors as they closed the gap on Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Mourinho admits his side should have been out of sight, but was relieved United didn't follow Liverpool's lead after their collapse against Sevilla last week.

The Special One said: “It was an easy match to win comfortably, in the last minutes we should be smoking a cigar, but in the end it is three points. We had chances for four, five and six (goals).

“We had that in the first half. We finished the first half with a chance from an open goal. We had more in the second half, again and again. And we didn’t score.

“Watford gave us a couple of minutes where they felt anything could happen. This is football. Last week, Borussia Dortmund-Schalke, 4-0, 4-4.

“A couple of weeks ago, Liverpool (at Sevilla), 3-0, 3-3. That’s football.”
