David de Gea will start for Manchester United between the sticks against Basel on Tuesday night, Jose Mourinho has confirmed.

The Spaniard made way for Sergio Romero last campaign for United's run to the Europa League final, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Mourinho has performed a U-turn this time around and will stick with Dea Gea for the Champions League opener, rather than giving him a breather.

Romero, who signed a new United contract until 2021 earlier this year, could make his first club appearance of the season in next week's Carabao Cup tie against Burton Albion.

Mourinho had already stated Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling would replace suspended duo Eric Bailly and Phil Jones. Lindelof has only made one competitive appearance for United so far and Mourinho will ease him back into the side.

"Even if Bailly and Jones were not suspended, probably I would still play Lindelof and Smalling tomorrow," Mourinho said. "They are at the same level, they are just different players."

Marouane Fellaini is still a doubt after missing the weekend draw at Stoke with a calf injury.

"Let's see if he can train today," Mourinho added. "He's a very important player for me, much more important than you can imagine. He had a [calf] problem with his national team and then he played a match against Greece, and after the match he felt the problem.

"If his condition improves he will be selected, because I need him."
