Jose Mourinho will discover on Monday whether he will face punishment over his touchline dismissal.

Mourinho was left bemused and annoyed after being sent to the stands during Manchester United’s win at Southampton.

The FA confirmed they will wait to see the details of referee Craig Pawson’s report before deciding whether to take any action against Mourinho and made it clear that not every touchline dismissal results in a ban or punishment.

Mirror Sport understands Mourinho went into the referees’ room after the game with a member of United staff to see the officials as he was complaining in the tunnel he did not even know why he was sent off.

Fourth official Mike Jones reported Mourinho to Pawson for encroaching on to the pitch and the Portuguese was later shown footage which proves his foot just went over the white line. Pawson’s report will say it was for encroachment.

It is not known whether Mourinho was invited into the referees’ room.

Managers have been fined and punished for going into the referees’ room without permission while some officials do allow bosses to speak to them after games.

Mourinho got into trouble with officials on several occasions last season, including being sent off against Burnley and West Ham and was handed touchline bans.

That could count against him if this latest incident is deemed serious and there has been a crackdown on managers and their behaviour on the touchline.

But it would be a surprise if Mourinho got a ban but encroachment was one of the key elements of the code of conduct brought in after being jointly agreed by the FA, Premier League, Football League, LMA and PFA.
