Jose Mourinho reckons Manchester United's thumping win over Everton was the Red Devils' best display of the season.

United ran riot at Old Trafford to record their third 4-0 win of the campaign so far, with Antonio Valencia, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial finding the net.

Valencia opened the scoring in spectacular fashion after only four minutes, cracking one from outside the area past Jordan Pickford and high into the goal.

It stayed 1-0 until seven minutes from time when, after Wayne Rooney had received a warm ovation after being substituted off on his return to the Theatre of Dreams, Mkhitaryan made it 2-0.

He profited from a poor pass out by Ashley Williams and slid home from Lukaku's calm pass.

The Belgian then turned scorer when, after his free-kick had struck the wall, he was fed at the back post and finished past Pickford, cupping his ear to the travelling Evertonians in celebration.

Martial completed the rout from the penalty spot after Morgan Schneiderlin had handled, and Mourinho was delighted with his players.

"I think the performance was very good, especially in the first 30-35 minutes, it was probably our best performance of the season," he told Sky Sports.

"We pressed them and they did not have a chance to get out, they did not have a shot, it was very impressive. After that, Everton's good players came out and showed their qualities.

"They gave us difficulty but I looked behind me on the bench and saw alternatives.

"The Premier League now is becoming very trendy with five at the back, so the best way to play against that is to play five at the back yourself.

"When you try not to match the tactical system of the opponent, you take risks. So we played with three up top plus Henrikh Mkhitaryan. You have to kill the game and give them little chances.

"There was a moment where I felt we did not kill it so we have to make it solid with Ander Herrera. The second goal went in, then game over."
