Luke Shaw put in a man of the match performance in Manchester United's 2-1 win over CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The left-back has struggled for regular first team football under Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford, but proved he still has value in this current Premier League title chasing side.

Ryan Giggs was caretaker boss of Manchester United when the former Southampton defender joined for around £30million in 2014.

He went on to become a regular starter in the 2015/16 campaign under Louis van Gaal before breaking his leg and enduring a long spell out the first team.

Mourinho later took over the helm at Manchester United, and was involved in a clash with the player last season, where he questioned his fitness.

Shaw has since struggled for regular game time, but is still only 22, and could yet turn his career around under the Portuguese.

Back in 2014 Mourinho had the chance to sign Shaw for Chelsea.

In fact the south west London club appeared to be the then teenager's most likely destination, but the Blues boss opted to sign Filipe Luis instead.

Discussing his reasons for turning down Shaw, Mourinho said in 2014: "If we pay to a 19-year-old boy what we were being asked for, to sign Luke Shaw, we are dead.

"We would have killed our stability with financial fair play and killed the stability in our dressing room.

"Because when you pay that much to a 19-year-old kid – a good player, fantastic player – but when you pay that amount of money, the next day, we would have had players knocking on our door.

"They would have been saying, 'How is it possible I play 200 games for this club, won this and that, yet a 19-year-old comes here and gets more money than I get?'

"It would have killed immediately our balance and we couldn't allow that.

"I don't criticise another club for paying it. They can pay what they want. I don't have any comment about it.

"But for my club we can say it would be very negative for us, especially when we can say Felipe is much less expensive. Sometimes you have to make decisions."
