Jurgen Klopp has revealed Georginio Wijnaldum was so far out of his plans he didn't even take his boots to London to face West Ham.

The Liverpool midfielder played the full 90 minutes as his side romped to a 4-1 victory, days after limping off against Maribor.

Wijnaldum underwent a scan in the week and wasn't going to be involved at the London Stadium.

But after a late injury to Jordan Henderson, Klopp was forced to call upon the Dutch midfielder.

"We lost our skipper overnight and Gini Wijnaldum did not have his boots here," he said.

"We thought he had no chance of playing, we only brought him here so he is nearer to Amsterdam, he was flying there to see the doctor, and he played 90 minutes."

The win takes Liverpool into sixth with four of the top five facing each other on Sunday.

And Klopp admits the result is a crucial one ahead of the international break as he reserved special praise for Sadio Mane who returned to the starting line-up after injury.

"The result, it feels good. We changed our approach, it was a counter-attacking line-up to use our speed from a deep situation," he added.

"We brought in Mane after one session. I never did it before, to be honest. It was not the worst idea I ever had!

"Mane is a naturally fit player, he could have played the 90 minutes after just one training session."
