I was doing some TV work after yesterday’s game at Anfield and I told the producer I needed danger money!

They had only gone and set up the cameras right in front of the travelling United fans and, as you can imagine, they were not exactly friendly when they saw me.

I don’t know what the viewers back home made of the background noise when I was speaking, but perhaps it was a little bit more interesting than the actual game.

I was doing some analysis with Peter Schmeichel, and he was desperately disappointed with the way his former club played, and their lack of ambition.

For me, of course, I was disappointed Liverpool didn’t win, because they deserved to.

They were the better team, created the better chances and dominated most of the game… so the result continues a worrying trend of not delivering. Yet I have a message to those fans who are worried about Jurgen Klopp’s team, and are moaning about the lack of wins.

Yes, this was yet another draw, and yet another game where they didn’t take their chances, but you need a wider picture.

Look at how United played. Jose Mourinho had only one thing in mind – not to lose.

OK, if he got a chance to steal a win he’d obviously take it, but the fact is they came here with a clearly defined game plan to stop Liverpool.

I’m not criticising him for that. It’s Mourinho – he doesn’t care what people think, he doesn’t care about being called negative or boring.

He just cares about results, and to him, a point at Anfield is a good result.

Arsenal got taken apart a few weeks ago, so it was clear he knew what could happen if he allowed my former club any space and the chance to move the ball at pace.

The fact that a United side who have been playing such good football, have been on an incredible run – and scored so many goals with an exciting approach – ripped up that formula because of who they were playing is to Liverpool’s credit.

Mourinho was worried enough to change his tactics completely. That suggests Klopp isn’t as far away as many people are saying. I understand my old team-mate Jamie Carragher when he says they can’t win the title, but I’m wouldn’t be so definitive.

It’s true if you concede goals and miss chances at the other end, then you can’t win the league. Obviously. Yet Liverpool are a team that Jose Mourinho is prepared to rip up his tactical plans to try to stop.

That tells you there is quality, and there was no doubt they had enough to win this game.

They were also solid enough in defence, with only one chance for Romelu Lukaku – who disappointed me with his lack of movement – that I can remember.

I’ll say this though, you can’t keep saying ‘we were unlucky’ and that the biggest thing is they are still creating chances.

At some point, you have to take those chances, otherwise what is the point of creating them?

If it goes on for too much longer, then you have to look at the game plan and accept it’s not working, because in the end you have to score goals.

I’m not naive enough to say Liverpool can definitely win the title. But how many games have we played this season?

At this stage last year, I think Chelsea were 13th. Anything is possible, and Liverpool have a team for who most of the top clubs have genuine respect.

They perhaps need their big players to prove the difference.

Philippe Coutinho did what he had to do in terms of work, because it was a tight game where he had Ander Herrera following him around like a personal assistant.

Yet was that enough? United played with two banks of five, basically, and set up to force him as deep as possible.

It worked, because too many times he had to come and get the ball off the centre halves.

Liverpool need to move the ball quicker to help him, but in saying that, United planned to allow their opponents the ball, so long as it was slow ball. They stuck to that game plan, and you have to say it worked.

Whether people want to watch that on a regular basis is a different question entirely, though...and one Mourinho tends to have to answer three years into his reign at whichever club he’s been at.

Usually after winning a title, admittedly!
