Manchester United's performance in Saturday's goalless draw at Anfield was right out of the Jose Mourinho handbook.

The Portuguese frustrated his hosts as his United side ground out a point at Liverpool, with a defensive approach making it almost impossible for Jurgen Klopp's men to break their visitors down.

Even when they did get through United's rearguard action Liverpool were denied by David de Gea, who made a superb save to deny Joel Matip's effort from close range, but a look at the stats shows who Mourinho's real heroes were.

Because no-one on the pitch got through more running than both Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera, who both acted as screens for the United back four as they protected their point.

Playing in front of a back four of Antonio Valencia, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Matteo Darmian, Matic and Herrera each ran 11km (6.8 miles).

But it wasn't a good day for Lukaku (

That meant that they outran everyone on the Liverpool side, with Jordan Henderson the Reds' top runner at 10.8km.

Other key findings from Opta's running stats don't make good reading for Romelu Lukaku, showing that:

  • Three of the United back four (Valencia, Smalling, Darmian) covered more ground than Lukaku did over the 90 minutes
  • In fact, of the outfield players who completed 90 minutes, only Phil Jones and Joel Matip covered less ground than Lukaku
  • Jesse Lingard (26) completed more sprints in his 27 minutes on the pitch than Lukaku (25) did in his 90

It's no wonder Gary Neville laid into him then, is it?
