In the modern game, pace is king. And Christian Pulisic has that asset in abundance.

And not only that. The USA international is blessed with close control that will pose problems for the most organised of defences. There is also a maturity about his play that is beyond his years.

No wonder Liverpool are monitoring his development closely. They will not be alone.

Currently, Pulisic is confined to a berth wide on the left by Borussia Dortmund. That is something of a waste. Pulisic has it in his armoury to play the definitive number 10 role in the years to come

He was up against the experienced Serge Aurier last night -and he was intimidated not one bit. Aurier – the Ivory Coast international – is not known for taking prisoners.

Pulisic was unconcerned. When he was given the opportunity, he accelerated down the wing. If that avenue was blocked, Pulisic had no hesitation in cutting inside. More than one mazy sortie had the Tottenham defence stretched.

And there is nothing slight about Pulisic. He can ride a tackle with no problem. And as he develops he will get stronger and more street-wise.

With Dortmund's history of developing players and then selling on for a massive profit, it is unlikely that Pulisic will be a long-term asset at the club.

He has a confidence and assurance that belie his age. Some club, somewhere will have a huge talent on their hands.

Even now, he is worth every penny of his current £16 million valuation. He is a shrewd investment for someone. Liverpool will have competition and his emergence will have surely been noted by Bayern Munich who have a tendency to get their own way when it comes to transfers in Germany.

Jurgen Klopp needs to move quickly. But he will be more aware of that than anyone.
