Manchester City have deleted a tweet referencing Adam Johnson's career with the club.

Johnson, 30, was jailed for six years in 2016 for child sex offences.

City posted their usual 'on this day' clip on Wednesday, looking back on a 1-0 victory over Arsenal in the League Cup in 2011.

The video showed Johnson crossing the ball for Sergio Aguero to score a late winner at the Emirates.

However, Johnson's name was muted from the commentary as the City attack was launched.

Manchester City refused to comment when contacted by Mirror Sport - but the tweet has now been deleted.

Johnson spent two and a half years with City after arriving in the January transfer window in 2010 from Middlesbrough.

He forced his way into the England reckoning at the Etihad and played a role in the club's dramatic Premier League title success.

He moved to Sunderland months later in a £10million deal and was at the Stadium of Light when he was convicted.

Johnson is is allegedly reduced to tears on a daily basis as inmates chant "rapist" when he leaves his cell.

The former England and Sunderland winger is said to be among the most hated prisoners at HM Moorland and is subjected to football-style songs about his sex crimes.

His life inside prison is said to have changed dramatically after he was filmed joking with inmates about his schoolgirl victim.
