Kevin De Bruyne's perfectly-struck goal shorly after the break and a late Raheem Sterling effort gave Manchester City a 2-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk.

Pep Guardiola's side have now won their opening two Champions League games following an opening-night victory over Feyenoord.

But City's Argentine striker Sergio Aguero missed a chance to equal the club's all-time scoring record when his penalty midway through the second half was saved.

The miss left him one goal behind Eric Brook's record of 177 goals in all competitions - but Sterling did strike at the death.

The Premier League leaders now top Group F on six points with Shakhtar and Napoli both on three points.

Shakhtar want a penalty but the referee is having none of it.

Aguero misses the penalty!

That would have equalled City’s all-time scoring record!

Penalty City!

Raheem Sterling should score, but doesn’t. Instead he slices his shot wide with just the keeper to beat. De Bruyne was again at the heart of the move.

City are in control but until they get that second goal, Shakhtar will be confident of snatching a point.

De Bruyne comes close to his second - he’s been brilliant tonight - but his shot is blocked by Ismaily.

GOAL CITY!

Back underway!

HALF-TIME!

City struggling to break down the visitors during the opening 45 minutes.

Sane has been moved over to the left by Guardiola and he cuts in well before flashing a shot wide of the far post.

Not all one-way traffic though, Ederson has to dive to his right to palm away Taison’s curling effort.

Big chance for De Bruyne but unusually for him he fires the ball wide. Guardiola can’t believe it.

Taison works his way into a shooting position but Ederson makes the save.

Guardiola is particularly animated on the touchline tonight and he as a chat with his opposite number Paolo Fonseca after a foul on Kevin De Bruyne.

Fred drives into the box for the visitors but his run is brought to an end by Fernandinho - and he had to make it count against his countryman.

Shakhtar are showing they will be no shrinking violets here at the Etihad and certainly won’t be rolled over.

Another chance for Aguero who really has started the season on fire. This time he gets his shot on target but Pyatov makes the save.

Under pressure

City are dominating the early stages as Jesus crosses from the right but Silva can’t find the target.
