Benjamin Mendy will have a fitness test on his knee injury before Pep Guardiola finalises his line-up to face Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday.

Mendy was hurt in Manchester City ’s 5-0 romp against Crystal Palace and Guardiola will give the France full-back every chance to be fit.

Guardiola said: “He is going to take a test to see if he’s going to be able to play.”

Mendy is Guardiola’s only question mark and Vincent Kompany and Ilkay Gundogan are still out with their respective calf and knee problems.

Guardiola said: “Ilkay is training, but not full training, just with the ball. Vincent, it is to early for tomorrow.”

Guardiola is not getting carried by City’s red-hot form, even though the Blues have banged in 24 goals in their six-game winning streak.

The Catalan is wary of the threat posed by Shakhtar, who have won their last five games away in Europe.

“There’s always room for improvement,” said the Blues boss. “For example, in the second half against West Brom, they were better than us and for the first 30 minutes against Crystal Palace the other day. There is always room for improvement.

“Shakhtar are a good side. It was always so tough for me against them. I had a good result against them with Barcelona, but it was so tough.

“I have a lot of respect for them and they beat for me on of the best teams playing football right now in Napoli in their first game.”
