Manchester United fans were so happy with a tweet from Toni Kroos on Monday night that they have been urging the German midfielder to sign for the club ever since.

During a Q&A on the social network on Monday evening, the Real Madrid man was asked who he preferred out of the former England trio of Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard , and he opted for Scholes, which obviously went down well with United fans on social media.

Debates about the various abilities of all three have always been a hot topic on Twitter, and as reported by our friends at the Manchester Evening News, Kroos's intervention proved popular.

The German international was posed the question: "Being a top midfielder, who's the best out of Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes?"

And he responded simply: "Paul Scholes."

United targeted Kroos ahead of his move to Real Madrid in 2014 as an overdue successor to Scholes.

David Moyes had claimed a deal for the midfielder was "done", however that was nixed when Van Gaal, who coached Kroos at Bayern Munich, vetoed the move.

Instead, Kroos moved to the Bernabeu and won two Champions League titles.

"I wanted to bring Kroos to Manchester United, from Bayern," Moyes said. "I thought his range of passing and his ability to play people in would have made him a top United player, maybe Scholes' heir."

And United fans are now urging Kroos to swap Madrid for Manchester.

Jose Mourinho signed Nemanja Matic in the summer to bolster the midfield, but the area still needs strengthening ahead of next season.

Michael Carrick is likely to end his time at old Trafford as a player, although Mourinho has promised the 36-year-old a coaching role awaits when he does hang up his boots, while Marouane Fellaini is out of contract and United are still over-reliant on Paul Pogba.
