Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has lifted the lid on Sir Alex Ferguson's notorious 'hairdryer' treatment that helped instill discipline at Old Trafford for decades.

Rooney, himself, experienced it on several occasions, while the Everton star has revealed Ryan Giggs also faced it on plenty of occasions, report the Manchester Evening News.

The Scot has claimed in the past that he only utilised the harsh treatment on half a dozen occasions in his 26 years in charge of the Red Devils.

The term was born after former United forward Mark Hughes described the moments his former boss tore into the side after mediocre displays.

Now Rooney has spoken about his infamous man-management style - and claimed he fell victim to it more often than the majority of his teammates.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: "That happened with me and Giggsy more than anyone. We were the players he had a go at most. But he knew when he had a go at us two, the characters we were meant we would go out and improve.

"There were little things like if you were under 25 you couldn’t have a sports car. He was the best but he never complicated anything.

"Nowadays sometimes there is a bit too much information, too much thought going into it. Sometimes all you need is ‘You’re better than them, go and win it’.

"He had the balance right and his man-management was second to none. He knew the players he could have a go at and those he needed to put his arm round."

In an hour-long interview Rooney spoke about life at Old Trafford under Ferguson, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.

The former United captain, who scored 253 goals in 559 appearances for the club, also revealed the news of his Everton transfer was almost leaked by his seven-year-old son Kai before the deal was completed.

He explained: "He was delighted - I told him a few days before I should have really and he was telling his schoolmates just as it was getting done, but not quite done."
