Manchester United are reportedly set to beef up security at their £60 million Aon Training Complex due to the looming threat of terrorist attacks in the country.

The Red Devils have submitted plans to build a 'ring of steel' around the club's training facilities, with bollards, automatic barriers and an eleven foot steel gate among the security improvements set to be introduced.

Match day security has already been increased at Old Trafford this season, with fans now searched more thoroughly before entering the ground and the size of bags allowed into the venue has been reduced.

Other clubs in the country have also made significant increases to their security in response to the ongoing terror threat.

Representatives from United told the Daily Star : "A range of measures are proposed.

"This level of security is required due to the high profile of Manchester United and to ensure visitors are controlled and the complex remains secure."

The UK has been targeted in a number of terror incidents in 2017, with Manchester coming under attack when 22 people were killed following a concert in May.

United have also had a bomb scare at Old Trafford, when their match against Bournemouth on the final day of the 2015/16 season was postponed after a fake bomb that had been part of a security training drill was found in the stands.
